Charlie Dane - Dreamland

Lately it’s been harder and harder for artists to deliver what I could call “Magic” or “Lightning in a Bottle” via their music. In its purest form – it’s why we all listen to music in the first place. Music can be very powerful thing and offers up perspective of the artist and where they come from. No doubt there is quite a lot lost in translation these days amid the many distractions that exist in the industry. For the artists that can make this critical connection – in the end the legions of fans will thank you for it. Actually New York based “Charlie Dane” does all of the above.

“Dreamland” is her latest release and it has much to commend it. Admittedly, there is a whole lot of variety to these arrangements and performances – probably because this CD has many things going for it. First: the impressive 13 year old Dane has a Total Package Delivery. She has the voice, look and songwriting prowess to be extermely dangerous. Second: She has been playing music festivals such as South By Southwest, Gathering Of The Vibes, Great South Bay Music Festival, Equifunk, the 27 since a very young age. Finally: There is a unique quality to this catalogue that breaks the mold from the mudane pop that's filling the airwaves. Dane has delivered a pure pop-guitar driven sound that will remind you of Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Leann Rimes and even hints of Macy Gray. Not every square inch is filled with a vocal delivery under duress – but musical space this allows the music to breathe via Danes' amazing vocal presence. My top three tracks:  “Tuesdays’ Just as Bad", "All I Know" and "Back in Time.” Equally as impressive is how marketable Dane truly is. I always said if you can play it a party, then it’s marketable. The music is extremely likeable and commercially viable with a fresh sound and youthful aftertaste. It also takes us back to our musical roots with a more traditional rock foundation - I like the call. It will also genuinely lift your spirits unlike most music you hear on the radio.

“Dreamland” by Charlie Dane is an endearing album limited by nothing. I would imagine in time we will hear more from this amazing artist from Oyster Bay, NY. Time will tell but I can honestly say this is one female artist that is set up for success down the road with her infectious musical personality and fresh sound. She is clearly well positioned to make a move in 2012.

Rating: 5/5
